The Canteen & Coexist

With all the changes in the last couple of weeks at Hamilton House we, The Canteen, would like to make our feelings of the situation known.

We love being part of the HH community and have always and will continue to support Coexist, being the organisation that manages Hamilton House so creatively, and are working behind the scenes to make this the reality, but we are not prepared to be used as a political football by any third party during this uncomfortable and difficult time for all. Instead we would like to focus on possible solutions to keep Coexist at the forefront of what happens within this space. For years now we have provided a space for Coexist to use for art exhibitions and this week we were asked for the current one to be taken down by our landlords, C&C.  We would like to suggest taking advantage of the availability of that space to offer it as a place for public debate, that is positive and solution focused, about the future of Hamilton House.
We are very much looking forward to the Hamilton House open day later this month, where we can’t wait  to  begin celebrating the vibrant, creative community we have here and show off all that has been achieved in the last 10 years, and to help to find a way for this community hub to stay at the heart of  the thriving Stokes Croft community.

Love Food Give Food – Action against hunger throughout September at The Canteen

This autumn, we’re thrilled to be taking part once again in Love Food Give Food for Action Against Hunger. We’re joining forces with hundreds of restaurants across the UK, raising funds to help save the lives of malnourished children, and provide their families with access to nutritious food. During September we will be donating 25p from all of our main dishes to support Action Against Hunger’s vision of a world free from hunger.

A big thank you to you, our amazing customers for joining us in supporting this fantastic cause and challenging child hunger worldwide.

Raise the Disco – raised a lot!

We had an absolute blast with our friends at Second step a couple of week’s ago.
Raise the disco was a night organised by Izzy from Second Step and The Canteen. A disco night where all donations on the door went to the charity. If you came you know that it was good vibes all night long and we had plenty of people shaking their thang on the dance floor.
Raise The Disco
The money raised has gone towards starting a brand new fund for Second Step service users. Sylvia’s Fund will be available to any current Second Step service user who wishes to apply for help to allow them to improve their well being. The fund can be used to buy something as simple as a paint brush or pay for a day’s course in music therapy or creative writing.

Find out more about Second Step and the great work they do in the city here and thanks to everyone who came and made this possible.

Here’s some photo’s from the night and keep a look out for the next one!

The Canteen Steps Up

Raise The Disco: Fundraiser for Second Step at The Canteen

The Canteen is proud to present a stellar lineup of local Bristol’s artists for a special fundraiser named Raise the Disco on 12th May in honour of Bristol born Second Step Charity. Raise the Disco is also the first awareness event being brought to you by The Canteen with the aim of not just entertaining and getting people boogieing (although we promise to do this), but also to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis involving homelessness in our city and to shine a light on the amazing work Second Step achieves everyday.

Second Step

Second Step is a leading mental health charity in the South West offering housing, support and hope to thousands of people with mental health and other problems. In the mid-1980s, a passionate group of social workers and community psychiatric nurses recognised that many people were in hospital not just because of their mental health problems, but because they had nowhere else to go. Housing initiatives at that time didn’t give people the mental health and practical support they needed once out of hospital.

Late Night Love Affair

Opening the launch will be Late Night Love Affair; this Bristol duo of Rodeane & Thomas, these guys aim to bring all the tunes inside there hearts & record bags. Hot of their sets at sleazy sessions and love inn – a boogie is guaranteed. Love, Boogie & Dance – this Bristol duo aim to bring all three of these items inside there hearts & record bags.

French Kiss

Not only great DJ’s but quickly becoming Bristol most wanted is the trio French Kiss, the DJ collective will be showcasing quality dance music. French Kiss have been making a name for themselves by holding nights in Crofters rights and are becoming a name on the stokes croft music scene.

Ere Wax

Closing the show are the infamous Ere Wax, not only does Ere Wax make you want to dance the night away but they also make you wish it never stops; most recently taking the to the stage at ‘The Masked Ball’ we are too emotional with excitement to see what the Bristol and Falmouth collective have in store.

At a time in society where venues are just as vulnerable as people Second Step is proud to be supported by The Canteen Bristol to raise awareness on the threat housing pressures are having on all parts of society. This night is not a political one nor does it expect to start a revolution (but keeping fingers crossed) – It is a night where music lovers with some big hearts can show their support to the services tackling everyday to keep every person safe.

Burns Night 2018

It’s a new year and we’re all heading into 2018 timidly after a whirlwind of a 2017! Be timid no more, shake off those winter blues and get on those dancing shoes because at the Canteen we’re getting ready for some Burns night celebrations.

If you’re going to celebrate Scotland’s greatest poet then you definitely need the kind of full-blooded roots music that Fitty Gomesh make. Ripsnorting traditional folk dance tunes from the Celtic fringes all cranked up to get you stripping the willow until you can strip no more.

Factor in some single malt and a special ‘Burns night’ menu and there’ll be no timorous beasties in the house.
