Summer highlights at The Canteen

How is it June already?
The spring went by in a flash and we’re gearing up for a summer of free musical highlights with our usual offering of fantastic food and drink that will make The Canteen the perfect summer venue for those days when you are not festival bound!

Dog In The Snow :Please:

In June we have some stand out and unusual bands heading to our stage like the experimental Dog In The Snow, Brighton-based Helen Ganya Brown experiments with existential-driven lyrics and layers of off-kilter sounds to create a peripatetic musical landscape.
Finding  inspiration in juxtapositions: the warm project title goes hand-in-hand with the grim ending of Kafka’s ’The Trial’. Inspired by the dark underbelly of Scott Walker, the mortal anxieties of Sufjan Stevens, the glistening soundscapes of Susumu Yokota, this is going to be a magical set not to forget.

Then later in the month we have the brilliantly bizarre Il Conciorto. They’re probably the only band that gets to eat their instruments on a regular basis, the Italian duo wire up peppers, cauliflowers, fennel and aubergines and proceed to make music with them. Every vegetable tells a story in their hands, revealing their secret passions and powers … or so the Conciorto boys would have us believe.

In July we are hoping for some good weather for the Boom Sound BBQ. BS006 Flavour launch party. Where Leo Samson feat. Gardna & Tiffani Juno are launching Flavour. You can expect plenty special guest DJs & MCs, a Neverlution Sound System and a big  Boom BBQ going on out on our decking with some bangin’ food & cocktails

Burns Night

Happy new year to all our Canteen customers!

Our first event of 2017 is just around the corner and we are celebrating Burns night at in style.

Throughout the day we will have dishes on the menu that celebrate Scottish culinary traditions (Haggis will be a feature!)  and a wide range of lip smackingly good whiskey behind the bar, perfect for a post work tipple.

Once the sun is down we’ll have a very special musical guest taking to the stage to celebrate in raucous style.

Calling all creatures great and small

Over the great plains and across the mighty gorge exists a tropical paradise untouched by the outside world. A perfect balance of nature exists here where rich diversity flourishes and natural resources are plentiful. All of the animals live here in perfect harmony. Word is being passed from parrot to python, bat to bear, leopard to lemur and cricket to crocodile; that message is universal – together we shall celebrate the New Year.

Expect themed decor, Jungle dress code and a wild atmosphere.

The Severn Project Crowd Funder

We have been buying top quality produce from the Severn project for nearly 7 years. They can always be relied upon to provide fantastic service with the personal touch as well as really high quality ingredients that help keep The Canteen sustainable and seasonal.

The Severn Project is constantly evolving and developing and they need your help to put down some roots of certainty in Holt (Wiltshire). Moving to the new site would mean that they can expand their range to include vegetables and would be able to grow around 15 tons per year of parsley, coriander, mint, dill, edible flowers and peashoots to keep up with customer demand.

If you are interested in local food production at scale this crowdfunder should interest you. They are an organisation that invite the community to integrate with the whole business of food production from field to plate, helping to stimulate the local economy through both sales and employment.

Action Against Hunger at The Canteen

25p from every main meal we sell throughout September will go to projects providing clean water & good nutrition to malnourished children in over 50 countries worldwide. It’s a great cause and one we really want to shout about it, so next time you’re in take a look at the leaflets and posters that are dotted around the bar or for more information visit their website.

Dub BBQ at the Canteen

We’ve got what your summer has been waiting for!

On Saturday 20th August we will be firing up the BBQ with plenty of incredible eats out on the decking while DJ Selecta Fiyah Mama & Dj Ruben Robinson blast out some stonking dub that will keep you dancing throughout the day.

Total Produce Open Day

Earlier this week executive chef, Scott Hislop, was up bright and early to visit one of our suppliers on their open day.

Total Produce is a large whole sale service that works with growers and producers from all around Somerset and the UK and provide us with fresh produce as well as dry goods to use in our kitchens.

Brand manager Charlie Hicks, was kind enough to give us a tour around the whole sale market where we got to try some of the delicious ingredients and find out more about how they work closely with some of Britain’s best growers to get the best quality produce to your plate.

As well as all the great suppliers they had chefs, Adrian John Kirikmaa and Romy Gill cooking much needed sausage sandwiches early in the morning and giving cooking demos later in the day.

We even got to see our own dedicated shelves where we found our latest delivery of beautiful English tomatoes ( which Scott was pretty pleased with! )

Lush lunches at The Canteen

Not got much time at lunch?

As well as our daily lunch time offerings of delectable dishes, we are now selling a range of sandwiches that follow our usual ethos of sustainability, with different fillings including vegetarian and vegan options cooked up daily by head chef, Christabel Courtauld.

Our sandwiches are priced between £3-£4 and are made using our own bread from the The Old Market Assembly Bakery.  Why not treat yourself to some take away cake for dessert? Or if you have a little more time get yourself the ultimate lunch time combination of soup and a sandwich.
