Our Story

The Canteen opened in 2009 to serve people in and around Hamilton House and Stokes Croft, Bristol. With award nominations and citywide recognition, The Canteen is a place to meet, eat, drink, and listen to some of Bristol’s best live music.

Sustainability is the core of our business. We are always looking at ways we can reduce our carbon footprint and impact on the planet. From the food we serve to the way we serve it. Everything is carefully considered to have the lowest impact possible.

Our free live music policy six nights of the week, makes us a well established institution on the music circuit. Bringing some of the best nights out in Bristol, from high quality local acts to open-mic sessions. We are proud to be at the forefront of Bristol’s grassroots music scene

Since 2020 we are proudly serving a 100% vegetarian menu. All our dishes follow the seasons for fresh, nutritious and delicious food. By sourcing much of our produce from Bristol based suppliers we can cut down on food and booze miles, and help support the amazing local businesses on our doorstep.

We recognise that sustainability comes in more than just what we eat and drink. In April 2022 we became a certified real Living Wage Employer. Helping both team and individuals carve out a more rewarding and comfortable life.

Do you know we have sisters in the city? Following our strong ethos of seasonal, local and sustainable our three independent venues proudly fly the flag for great Bristol food, drink and music. No.1 Harbourside treats you to fresh, tasty food and local beers in the perfect waterfront setting. The Old Market Assembly offers creative food menus, and top entertainment on the weekends.
